Kaiho’s recycling technology ensures that the ecological footprints of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) are significantly reduced by effectively dismantling and recycling almost every single part of a vehicle.
Since 2023, Kaiho has been selected to provide technical training for the Skills Training for Employment Program in Africa (STePP) by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). This program seeks to spread recycling technology for ELVs across the continent.
In December 2025, Kaiho signed a memorandum of understanding with Nigeria’s NADDC to provide support in Nigeria’s first environmentally friendly ELV recycling plant, following similar programs in places like Uganda and Tanzania.
Consequently, Kaiho Sangyo is in position to play a huge role in Africa taking a significant step toward proper management of ELVs in the region.

THE RISING ISSUES OF END-OF-LIFE VEHICLES (ELVs) IN AFRICA
Africa has seen a huge growth in the second-hand car market for a long time, with imports coming mainly from Japan, America, and several European countries. As early as 2025, it is estimated that report over a quarter of a million used cars are imported in Nigeria and Ghana alone. These numbers continue to grow as more African countries are included.
While this shows a population moving toward more affordable personal transport, a major problem arises regarding how these vehicles are managed when they break down or reach the end of their lifespan. Currently, there are no policies in place or proper facilities to deal with cars at the end of their life cycle in Africa. As a result, many vehicles are abandoned in unregulated open spaces or scrap yards without proper management.

THE IMPACT
Following successes in building recycling plants in India, Brazil, and Kenya, Kaiho’s recycling initiatives are on pace to bring real change to Africa’s battle with climate change through proper ELV recycling. Simultaneously, these projects open doors for economic growth through employment opportunities for young people in the region.
Vehicles contain valuable recyclable materials, including:
- Steel
- Aluminum
- Copper
- Plastics
- Rubber
- Glass
Recovering these materials creates a circular economy, where waste vehicles become the raw materials for new industries.
