As early as 2025, it is estimated that report over a quarter of a million used cars are imported in Nigeria and Ghana alone. These numbers continue to grow as more African countries are included.

While this shows a population moving toward more affordable personal transport, a major problem arises regarding how these vehicles are managed when they break down or reach the end of their lifespan. Currently, there are no policies in place or proper facilities to deal with cars at the end of their life cycle in Africa. As a result, many vehicles are abandoned in unregulated open spaces or scrap yards without proper management.

THE IMPACT

Following successes in building recycling plants in India, Brazil, and Kenya, Kaiho’s recycling initiatives are on pace to bring real change to Africa’s battle with climate change through proper ELV recycling.
